Resumo: Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de identificar qual o grau de importância que os pecuaristas da bovinocultura de corte atribuem à preservação ambiental de sua fazenda; e quais são as práticas de gestão ambiental desenvolvidas por eles. Para a sua realização, 125 pecuaristas foram entrevistados por meio de um questionário durante a Expozebu de 2003. Do total de pecuaristas entrevistados, 44,6%, residem e possuem fazenda localizada no Sudeste do país, 50% do total atribuíram grau de importância entre 9 e 10 e 32,8 % entre 7 e 8. 25,4% do total dos pecuaristas consideram que reciclar é queimar o lixo, e 72,1%, não desenvolvem nenhuma prática para solucionar o problema do acúmulo de lixo gerado na fazenda, conseqüentemente, da poluição. Concluiu-se que os pecuaristas consideraram importante a preservação ambiental da fazenda, mas a essência do desenvolvimento sustentável não está presente na mente deles, e a consciência de que preservar é preciso está em segundo lugar. A prática de gestão ambiental mais desenvolvida pelos pecuaristas é a recuperação de áreas degradadas.

Degree of importance that the beef cattle farmers attribute to the environmental preservation and the techniques enviromental management developed by them

abstract: The objective of this study was to identify the degree of importance that the beef cattle farmers attribute to the environmental preservation; and to evaluate which are the techniques enviromental management developed by them. One hundred and twenty five beef cattle farmers were interviewed through a questionnaire during Expozebu 2003, in Uberaba - MG, and it was analyzed by association means using the "qui-quadrado" test. From the total of beef cattle farmers interviewed 44,6% live and possess farm located in the Southeast of the country. 50% (of total farmers) attributed degrees of importance between 9 and 10; 32,8% between 7 and 8. 25,4% (of total farmers) considers that recycling it is the best way to burn the waste. 72,1% (of total farmers) doesn’t develop any techinique to solve the problem of the garbage accumulation generated in the farm, consequently, of the pollution. Results indicated that the essence of the tenable development concept isn't in the beef cattle farmers mind and the conscience of preserving necessity is on the second thoughtIt. The technique of recuperating damaged areas is more developed by farmers.
