The European Union has significantly changed its approach to food safety since the turn of this new century. The changes were due to a number of significant food health scares in the 1990s including BSE in cattle, antibiotics in chicken feed, dioxin in animal feeds and a series of cases of contamination of drinks (Coka Cola), of cooking oil, and outbreaks of salmonella. As a result of these problems, consumers and the general public lost confidence in the capacity of the Regulator to ensure safe and healthy foods. The solution was a complete overhaul of the rules and the enforcement of those rules.
